What is cold rolled galvanized steel?

Cold-rolled galvanized steel is a type of steel that is rolled at room temperature and then galvanized. It combines the high precision of cold rolled steel with the corrosion resistance of galvanized steel, making it a high-quality metal material with a wide range of applications in various fields.

What is cold rolled steel?

Cold rolled steel refers to steel processed through the cold rolling process at room temperature. The cold rolling process usually uses hot-rolled steel coils as raw materials, which undergo acid washing to remove oxide scale and then are rolled below the recrystallization temperature to ultimately form cold-rolled steel products.

Cold Rolled Definition

Cold-rolling is a steel production method. Cold rolling technology shapes metals through methods such as cold drawing, cold bending, and cold drawing, allowing the metal to maintain its original grain structure after rolling, thereby endowing the metal with new mechanical and physical properties

Cold rolled galvanized steel features

  • High precision: Cold rolled galvanized steel has high dimensional accuracy and surface quality, which can meet the requirements of high-precision processing.
  • Excellent mechanical properties: cold rolled galvanized steel has high strength and hardness while maintaining good plasticity and toughness. This makes it able to withstand large loads without breaking easily.
  • Excellent anti-corrosion properties: the galvanized layer can effectively prevent the steel from being corroded and extend the service life of the steel. Especially in humid and corrosive environments, the anti-corrosion performance of cold rolled galvanized steel is more prominent.

Cold rolled galvanized steel application

  • Construction industry: Commonly used to make roofing, walling, and other building components. Its excellent anti-corrosion properties and high strength make the building components more durable and safer.
  • Automotive industry: It is used to make key components such as car bodies and chassis. These components need to withstand large loads and impacts, and the high strength and toughness of cold rolled galvanized steel can meet these requirements.
  • Home appliance industry: such as the shell and internal structure of refrigerators and washing machines. Its excellent surface quality and anti-corrosion properties make home appliances more beautiful and durable.
  • Other fields: It is also widely used in transportation, petrochemical, machinery manufacturing, and other fields.

Cold Rolled Steel Applications

How does cold rolled galvanized steel made?

There are two main steps involved, which are as follows:

1. Cold Rolling

Plasticizing steel by rolling, drawing, extruding, etc., at room temperature to obtain the desired shape, size, and properties of the steel. During the cold rolling process, the steel is rolled in several passes and annealed to eliminate work hardening.

2. Galvanizing

The cold rolled steel is immersed in a molten zinc solution to form a zinc coating on the steel surface. This zinc coating significantly improves the corrosion resistance of the steel.

Difference between galvanized steel and cold rolled steel

1. Strength Comparison

The base material for galvanized steel products can be cold rolled steel or hot rolled steel. Usually, the yield strength of hot rolled steel is higher than that of cold rolled steel because the cold rolling process destroys the grain structure of the steel, while hot rolling improves the grain structure. However, in terms of surface aesthetics, cold rolled steel is superior to hot rolled steel.

2. Processing method Comparison

Cold rolling and galvanizing are two different production stages. Cold rolling precedes galvanizing and is used for forming, while galvanizing is after rolling and is used for corrosion protection. We can galvanize cold rolled steel sheets to make galvanized cold rolled steel sheets for better performance.

What is the difference between cold rolled GI sheet and hot rolled GI sheet?

In the production of conventional galvanized sheet, cold-rolled substrates are the main ones, while hot-rolled substrates are relatively rare. So what is the difference between hot-rolled and cold-rolled galvanized products?

1. Cost: Hot-rolled sheets have one less process than cold-rolled sheets, so the cost is relatively low.

2. Quality performance: Hot-rolled substrates are only cleaned by pickling and annealing, and the surface is relatively rough. The coating is thick but the thickness is uneven, and the precision is not as high as that of cold-rolled sheets. In terms of mechanical properties, the two are not much different, and some properties are even better than cold-rolled sheets.

3. Application: Hot-rolled galvanized sheets are better than rough and heavy ones for structural components with low surface requirements but high strength and thickness requirements. Cold-rolled galvanized sheets are better than high-precision thinner and uniform surfaces for more delicate occasions.

4. Brand: Common brands of hot-rolled galvanized sheets are DD51D+Z, HD340LAD+Z, HR340LA, HR420LA, HR550LA, etc. The corresponding cold-rolled galvanized sheet is DC51D+Z, HC340LAD+Z, HC340LA, HC420LA, HC550LA, etc.

There is also a brand that does not indicate whether it is a cold-rolled or hot-rolled substrate, such as dx51d+Z, which can generally be regarded as a hot-rolled galvanized sheet.

Cold Rolled Galvanized Steel Precautions

1. Storage environment

Cold rolled galvanized steel should be stored in a dry, ventilated, non-corrosive environment, avoiding contact with moisture, oil, and other harmful substances.

2. Processing

When processing and handling cold rolled galvanized steel, care needs to be taken to avoid scratches and deformation. At the same time, appropriate processing methods and process parameters should be selected according to specific application scenarios.

3. Quality testing

Before use, quality testing should be carried out. This includes the thickness, uniformity, adhesion of the zinc layer and the mechanical properties of the steel. Ensure that the quality of the steel meets the standard.
